Birds, Beans & Conservation in Action: Two Inspiring Evenings with Scott Weidensaul

This spring, Birds & Beans was honored to co-sponsor, along with NOFA VT and our host locations, two unforgettable evenings with renowned author, ornithologist, and conservation advocate Scott Weidensaul — and we’re still buzzing from the energy, insight, and inspiration he brought to Vermont.

Scott, a Pulitzer Prize finalist spoke to packed audiences in both Manchester (at the Manchester Community Library) and Rupert (at Merck Forest), sharing stories from the front lines of bird migration research and connecting the dots between our everyday choices and the survival of migratory species across the Americas.

A Shared Mission: Coffee as Conservation

Scott, spoke passionately about the dramatic decline in migratory bird populations and the urgent need to protect their habitats across the Western Hemisphere. He connected these environmental challenges directly to something as simple as the coffee we drink each day.

At the heart of his message was the importance of Smithsonian-certified Bird Friendly® coffee — the gold standard in environmentally sustainable coffee production. Unlike conventional or even standard organic coffee, Bird Friendly coffee is grown under a canopy of native trees that supports biodiversity, reduces carbon impact, and protects critical bird habitat.

Scott emphasized that by choosing Bird Friendly coffee, consumers can make a powerful impact on the health of migratory bird populations. With every sip, you're helping to preserve the forests birds rely on throughout their life cycles.

We’re proud that every bag of Birds & Beans coffee is triple-certified: Bird Friendly, USDA Organic, and Fair Trade. And we're grateful to everyone who attended these events, asked thoughtful questions, and left more deeply connected to the conservation mission we share.

A Movement Fueled by You

These events reminded us just how much momentum there is behind this movement — and how deeply people care about doing better for the Earth and all its creatures.

To everyone who attended, asked questions, bought books, or simply left feeling more hopeful: thank you.

And if you couldn’t be there, we invite you to watch Scott’s Manchester talk, recorded by GNAT-TV:
